July 24, 2020 Axiom to expand its CMC product portfolio with Carbon/SiC and SiC/SiC composite

Axiom, a specialist in the development and supply of oxide/oxide CMC prepregs for aerospace and industrial applications, is to develop a line of carbon/SiC and SiC/SiC composite intermediates under license from JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) and NITE (Nano-Infiltration and Transient Eutectic-phase) Corporation of Japan. This will allow Axiom to expand its offerings over a complete spectrum of CMC materials for aerospace and industrial structural applications with service temperatures to 1400°C.
Axiom Materials is expanding its CMC product portfolio with Carbon/SiC and SiC/SiC composite products for aerospace and industrial markets under a new technology license. JST, the key governmental agency for Science and Technology in Japan which was ranked fourth place in the World’s Most Innovative Research Institutions at Reuter’s “Top 25 Global Innovators 2017”, and NITE Corporation, providing the most advanced C/SiC and SiC/SiC Composites, and a spin-off company from the R & D activities of Kohyama Laboratory at Kyoto University, University of Tokyo, and Muroran Institute of Technology, are the licensors of the technology.
In addition to the Oxide/Oxide CMC prepregs for aerospace and industrial applications requiring service temperatures to 1100° C under stress, Axiom Materials will now be able to participate in a wider segment of the high temperature market. Introduction of C/SiC and SiC/SiC products under license from JST and NITE will allow Axiom to expand its offerings for aerospace and industrial structural applications with service temperatures to 1400° C. The expanded portfolio will also put Axiom Materials in a lead position to supply SiC/SiC materials for scientific and industrial nuclear plant applications where NITE technology has achieved a global recognition.
Static components of jet engines and automotive or aircraft disk brake applications are among the main areas that C/SiC composites are used for. Aerospace applications of SiC/SiC materials include aircraft jet engine power systems, rocket engine components requiring excellent resistance to high temperature, creep, high corrosion/erosion in a complex static and dynamic stress/strain environment, whereas industrial applications of SiC/SiC composites are found in nuclear energy, petro-chemical industry, chemical, geothermal and combustion plants, and transportation.
Axiom was acquired by Kordsa in early 2018, a former supplier and technical partner of the company in the field of textile reinforcement technologies. Axiom’s merger with Kordsa, a worldwide leader in reinforcement technologies from Turkey, brought together Axiom’s material innovation and Kordsa’s operational expertise, and both companies continue to scale the business in advanced composite material technologies.
Highlighting their commitment to growth in the market, Johnny Lincoln, Ph.D., President of Axiom Materials stated:
“Having invested for the scaled commercialization of OxOx CMC composite materials, the JST and NITE agreements bring us composite material technologies that are compatible with our equipment, expertise, and test capabilities. We are excited to bring these technologies to maturity in the high-temperature advanced composites market.”
Raj Dhawan, Senior Vice President of Business Development of Axiom Materials underlined Axiom’s strong market presence and added:
“The introduction of these advanced composite capabilities put Axiom Materials in a comprehensive leadership position for CMCs, inclusive of those for the highest temperature applications they perform to. We are honored to join with JST and NITE to become their technical partner in expanding the product lines together.”
